Where to Find TVPI Data for Private Equity Funds

Four metrics show up on nearly every private fund report. Here's what each one actually measures, how they work together, and where they can mislead you if read in isolation.

A fundraiser is two days out from an LP meeting and needs to know where a 2019 vintage mid-market buyout fund sits against its peers. The GP's deck has a TVPI figure. The LP will ask whether it is good, and nobody in the room can answer without a comparable set. The number exists somewhere. Finding it, and trusting it, is the hard part.

The usual places, and what each one gives you

Fund-level TVPI shows up in four places, and each has a catch.

What you get

Main limitation

Public pension board materials and performance reports

Fund-level net IRR and multiples for commitments the plan holds

Covers only funds the plan invested in; as-of dates and formats differ plan to plan

GP fact sheets, LP letters, and pitch decks

The GP's own reported TVPI

Self-reported, with a chosen as-of date, and often shown without DPI or RVPI

Allocator internal reporting (administrator statements, portfolio monitoring)

Complete data on that allocator's own commitments

Visible only to that allocator, with no peer set

What fund-level TVPI looks like in Dakota Private Markets

Dakota Private Markets carries Net IRR, TVPI, DPI, and RVPI on every fund record across asset classes. That means you can filter by strategy and vintage year, see the full set of return metrics side by side, and build a peer comparison without stitching together plan reports. The custom benchmarking dataset shows how those fund-level records roll up into vintage-year and strategy benchmarks.

Bottom line

Finding a TVPI number takes minutes. Finding one with a clean as-of date, a net basis, and DPI and RVPI beside it, so you can defend it in the meeting, is the actual work.

Dakota Private Markets

Dakota Private Markets puts fund-level performance in one place: Net IRR, TVPI, DPI, and RVPI, with benchmarking built on top. Fundraisers use it to size up peers before an LP meeting, and allocators use it to check a manager's numbers against the market.
